Real Weddings: Luxi and Xiaoliang

In October I had the honour of performing a renewal of vows ceremony for Luxi and Xiaoliang from China.

They had already tied the knot in China, but chose to have a beautiful lakeside ceremony as part of their honeymoon in New Zealand.

While the commitment given in a marriage is the same the world over, the legal marriage ceremony options open to couples marrying in some countries is limited compared to the choices available in New Zealand.  As a result some choose to elope somewhere that will allow them to legally marry however they like, while others like Luxi and Xiaoliang opt to have the required legal ceremony, then a private blessing ceremony later – whether that be at home with family and friends or abroad as part of their honeymoon.

I’m a licensed marriage celebrant which means I can perform a legal wedding anywhere (and I do mean anywhere) of the couple’s choosing within New Zealand.  But I’m also more than happy to perform a non-legal blessing ceremony for couples who are already legally married.

Exchanging rings… they got there eventually but like so many couples, even though they had rings made to fit, they just didn’t want to go on smoothly on the big day.  Photo courtesy of Miles Allan at Alpine Image Company

The day of Luxi and Xiaoliang’s wedding dawned with a bright blue sky…. And a strong cold wind. It wasn’t enough to deter Luxi and Xiaoliang though.  We held their ceremony on the shore of Lake Tekapo as planned.  An intimate ceremony witnessed by just their two friends, me, and their photographer Miles from Alpine Images in Wanaka.  They chose to say their vows to each other in Chinese (as it was a non-legal ceremony that was fine) , so while I didn’t know what they were saying, I could see from the emotion they showed, that their words were rich with love for each other.

My favourite part about Luxi and Xiaoliang’s ceremony?  They were so in touch with each other.  I didn’t need to tell them to look at each other, to hold hands, to kiss as often as they liked during their ceremony, to really live the emotions marrying your true love brings.

With a backdrop like this, you can see why New Zealand is a popular destination wedding spot.  Photo courtesy of Miles Allan Alpine Image Company

Luxi and Xiaoliang I wish you only the very best – a long and happy life together.  Congratulations!
